Overview
As discussed in
Traits: Tier List, it's important for your Champions to have the best Traits possible for
their role on your team: e.g. - DPS, Tank, Leadership, etc.. However, we
want to reach our target Traits as efficiently as possible given that Marriage
uses the following resources:
- Companions and Courting Bouquets to produce Heirs
- Energy Potions to raise Heirs
- Wedding Rings to Marry two Champions
- One Champion gets retired permanently from your Roster
In most RPGs, different Clans/Races have different skills they excel at, so
it's reasonable to test whether different Clans are more likely to get
different Traits. In addition, an information bubble in the Heirs
building contains the following text:
- Raising your Heirs in different ways may lead them to develop different personalities and traits
As such, we will investigate two methods of optimizing Trait Generation:
- Companion Clan: are some Companions more likely to obtain certain Traits than others?
- Raising Method: are some methods of raising Heirs (Train, Play, or Study) more likely to obtain certain Traits than others?
As well as test whether those methods impact the distribution of Trait
Levels..
Conclusions
There isn't enough data to say with confidence whether Companion Clan and
Raising Method produce Trait distributions that are statistically different
from Random, with Chi-Squared tests only showing significance at the 0.1 -
0.25 level. More data will be gathered, but the strongest results so far
are:
-
Travain
- Most Likely Traits: Confident, Energetic, Bestial
- Least Likely Traits: Healthy, Brutal, Pure-Heart
-
Sallyhorn
- Most Likely Traits: Athletic, Bestial, Noble
- Least Likely Traits: Brutal, Scrappy, Confident
While there isn't enough data to draw conclusions about Companion Clans and
Raising Method impacting Trait Distribution, there is sufficient data to
draw conclusions about whether those two methods impact Trait Levels.
The data was quite similar for both Travain and Sallyhorn, and whether the
Raising Method was Train, Play, or Study. Aggregating all data
together, the probabilities were:
- 16: 25.19%
- 17: 24.52%
- 18: 50.29%
The Chi-Squared significance for the distribution not being Uniformly Random
was far below 0.01 for all splits, and when combining all data together was
roughly 4.5e-30. So it's definitely not drawn from a 33.33% likelihood
for each Trait Level. We haven't advanced our Companions enough to
gather statistics on Trait Level above 18, but will update the probabilities
when we do.
Generating Heirs
A major source of Champions, and by extension the Traits you're trying to give
your Fighting/Leadership Champions, are your Companions. Companions have
several Properties associated with them:
-
Stars
- Determines how many Stars their Heirs will have
- Determines how much Energy it takes to Raise the Heir
- Determines how much Intimacy is needed to increase the Rarity of Heirs
-
Rarity
- Determines the Rarity of the produced Heir
When an Heir is produced it takes a certain amount of Energy to raise the Heir
into a new Champion. Each Heir starts with 6 Energy that can be expended
immediately on three different methods of Raising the Heir: Train, Play, or
Study. After that the Heir will gain 1 Energy every 2 hours, or you can
use an Energy Potion to give the Heir 3 additional Energy immediately:

If you increase Intimacy with your Companions then they will produce Heirs of
higher Rarity:

If your Companion's Intimacy is increased enough then they can start producing
Heirs with Traits above 18:

Increasing Intimacy is quite expensive, with the best observed rate being 1
Intimacy for 1 Diamond (obtained via Vendors in Dungeon Descent).
Combining the expensive nature of increasing Intimacy, our desire to have
Level 18 Traits, and the resources needed to Raise Heirs, an excellent
strategy is to get our One-Star Companions up to Mythic Rarity as quickly as
possible. This will provide us with a steady supply of Champions to
Marry every 12 hours, giving us the highest probability over time of getting
the Traits we want.
There are three One-Star Companions that you should aim to upgrade to Mythic:
Travain, Gryphon, Sallyhorn
|
|
|
These aren't the only Companions we upgraded Rarity for. We also
increased the Rarity for Companions that we wanted to be on our Fighting Team,
but it's usually worth it to get at least one of the One-Star Companions up to
Mythic before trying to improve your Fighting Team.
Generating Champions
Once we have a steady stream of Heirs, we can then experiment with different
methods of Raising the Heirs: Train, Play, or Study. In the extreme, we
can exclusively use one method and see how it impacts which Traits the
Champion gets.
Methodology
Unfortunately, we only raised Travain and Sallyhorn Companions to Mythic and
prioritized Fighting Champions over getting the Gryphon Companion to
Mythic. In addition, using other Companions to test Trait Generation
isn't realistic because Two-Star and Three-Star Heirs simply take too much
Energy to raise.
For each of Travain and Sallyhorn, we raised 49 Heirs exclusively using Train,
49 using Play, and 49 using Study. Each Mythic Heir will get 4 Traits,
which means each method of raising will have 4 * 49 = 196 data points.
There are 15 Common Traits that can be generated, so even producing 147 Heirs
for Travain and 147 for Sallyhorn, the bins still aren't well populated.
We conducted Chi-Squared tests to see whether the resulting Trait
Distributions were Random (Uniform).
Results
![]() |
Travain - Trait Distribution |
Travain: While there are hints that Travain Champions are more likely to get
Confident, Energetic, Bestial and less likely to get Healthy, Brutal,
Pure-Heart, the Chi-Squared Test says it is only significant at the 0.1 level.

Sallyhorn - Trait Distribution |
Sallyhorn: While there are hints that Sallyhorn Champions are more likely to get
Athletic, Bestial, Noble and less likely to get Brutal, Scrappy, Confident,
the Chi-Squared Test says it is only significant at the 0.25 level.
Even raising nearly 150 Champions from each Companion, the fact that there are
15 Common Traits to be selected from makes it so our bins simply don't have
enough data points in them to get statistical significance. Additional
data is needed to draw strong conclusions.
We can also examine the likelihood of getting different Trait Levels based on
Companion Clan and Raising Method.

Combined - Trait Level Distribution |
In this case the results are much more convincing, and Chi Squared
significance was below 0.01 for all splits. For the combined data the
significance was 4.59e-30, so there's no doubt that Trait Levels are not
equally likely when exclusively using a single Raising Method.
