Overview

Skills are combat abilities unique to each Champion, and are the primary way that Champions differ from each other.  Examples of Skill effects include healing, attacks that hit multiple opponents, crowd control (Sleep, Stun, etc.), and buffing/debuffing other Champions.  These abilities can be found in two places: (1) On the bottom right of your Champion's screen in a tab labelled "Skill Level-Up", (2) On the bottom left of the Renowned Champion's screen in a tab labelled "Info".  There you will find that each Champion has three skills:
  1. Active Skill (Left)
  2. Ultimate Skill (Middle)
  3. Passive Skill (Right)
Each Skill has a Level associated with it, in the range 1-15.  You can only level up your Skills to the number of Stars of your Champion, and doing so requires three resources used exclusively for this purpose:
  1. Tome of Knowledge (Blue)
  2. Tome of Heritage (Purple)
  3. Tome of Enlightenment (Yellow)
Some places Tomes can be acquired include: Expeditions, Arena Store, Banquets, Event Rewards, and Guild Conquest.

Conclusions

During combat, your Champion attacks once every Attack Speed seconds, a Statistic that can be found on your Champion's "Details" screen, by clicking on an "i" Information Bubble to the right of your Constitution/Fortitude.  The damage inflicted by these attacks is determined via a combination of your Champion's Strength and your Opponent's Fortitude, after taking modifiers into account for both.  However, the majority of damage and effects are inflicted by your Skills.
  1. Active Skill (Left)
    • Triggered based on a Timer that is not directly impacted by Attack Speed.  However, Traits/buffs that increase Attack Speed will increase the speed of animations, which can indirectly shorten the time between Active Skill activation.
    • The Timer for the first Active Skill is roughly 5 seconds, while subsequent Active Skills are separated by a different amount for each Champion (typically 8-12 seconds).
    • The Active Skill occurs on the first attack after Timer seconds have passed.
  2. Ultimate Skill (Middle)
    • During combat your Champion portrait has a green Constitution bar and a yellow Energy bar (also referred to as "Wrath" in Dungeon Descent Relics).  When the Energy bar is full at 1,000 Energy your Champion will use their Ultimate Skill.
    • Energy is accumulated by taking damage and by attacking.  Traits that increase Attack Speed will thus make you accumulate Energy faster and perform your Ultimate Attack sooner.
  3. Passive Skill (Right)
    • These Skills are always in play.

Skills are incredibly important for winning battles, and leveling up Skills can be quite expensive in terms of the Resources required.  Here we summarize the amount of each Resource required to incrementally go from level (N-1) to level (N), as well as the cumulative amount needed to go from level 1 to level (N):

It's important to Note that not all Skill improvements are equivalent, meaning that advancing from Level 4->5 will not provide the same improvement as advancing from Level 5->6.  For Champions whose Skills have multiple effects, they will often advance at uneven rates.  Some examples include:
  • Aeson - Male: Ultimate Skill increases damage on every improvement, but Reduction in Enemies' Damage dealt is only improved at Level 6 (goes from 10% to 15%) and Level 11 (goes from 15% to 20%).
  • Ignis - Female: Active Skill increases damage on every improvement, but chance to Stun is only improved at Level 6 (goes from 10% to 20%) and Level 11 (goes from 20% to 30%).
  • Bloom Uncounted - Female: Active Skill increases damage on every improvement, but length of time target is immune to Dream effects only decreases at Level 6 (goes from 8 seconds to 6 seconds) and Level 11 (goes from 6 seconds to 4 seconds)
An exhaustive review of all Champions has not been done, but it seems likely that Level 6 and Level 11 are the key levels for improvement of Skills.
